Grades 7-8: Week of 12/18/23

In Social Studies, we went through the importance of the industrial revolution of the late 19th century and early 20th century in America, along with immigration from the same time period. Students examined why modernity requires change and progress, which benefits a culture and society.

In Science, students are presenting their final report on the Owl pellet project. Although many were initially repelled by the pellet, most grew interested in the contents and were awed by the talent of owls in producing these artifacts of a good meal.

In Civics, students discussed the merits and successes of American labor unions, piggybacking off our ‘industry’ unit in history. Students also analyzed the possible side effects of organized labor. Lastly, students debated in class the virtue of child labor laws, including the effect on families where teens may have other responsibilities, which are hard for us to imagine.

This week in Art, the students finished drawing their forms from a still-life, and some drew a fruit still-life as well. They focused on the objects’ relationship to each other and shading to make them look 3D.
