Grades 5-6: Week of 10/2/23

In Language Arts, students began a short story unit, reading All Summer in a Day (Bradbury) and learning elements of a story and techniques authors use. Students considered alternate endings to the sci-fi, but relevant, story. They also finished Unit 2 of vocabulary this week.

This week in Judaics, we began learning the mishnah on Sukkah building. We started with using our “tefach” and “amah” to measure different things in school. We also measured in inches. Please ask your student what those Hebrew words mean.

In Geo-History, students continued their study of North America, identifying capital cities (and what a capital city is, in general). We also learned about the Native American nations in the various regions of the continent and students recognized the similarities and differences between various tribes.

In 5th Grade Math, we have been working on whole numbers: Place value, factors, multiples, prime, and composite numbers.

This week in 6th Grade Math, we have been working on multiplying and dividing fractions.

This week in Art, the students continued to work on their one-point perspective color wheels - it was challenging for them, but they persevered.

This week in Music, we got a fun piano/drum/guitar performance from Ari, Zevi, Ben, and Eli! We also had instrument day and continued with our study of Ireland. We used Irish Wooden Spoons to learn about different types of Irish dancing and time signatures such as the Reel, Jig, and Hornpipes! Our Mimi Award winner was Emily!
