Learning at Home: May 26, 2020

Shavuot 2020 (a two-day holiday, celebrated from sunset on May 28 until nightfall on May 30) coincides with the date that G-d gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago. It comes after 49 days of counting, from the second day of Passover, preparing ourselves for this special day.  People celebrate by lighting candles, staying up late to study and/or learn Torah, hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments, feasting on dairy foods and more.

I hope that you will watch our songs and stories, play the games and do the Shavuot activities this week, and bring the joy of Shavuot to your homes.
Our first video is MorahLana sharing a favorite children's Shavuot song of Moses (Moshe) climbing up Mount Sinai (HarSinai, in Hebrew) and receiving the Ten Commandments directly from G-d. The Jewish people, having followed Moses through the desert for so long were growing weary and while waiting for Moses to descend from Mount Sinai, almost gave up belief and decided to offer up their gold and build a golden calf (an idol) to pray to... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAH9sKu3p9Y

On Shavuot we eat sweet dairy foods, traditionally perhaps to symbolize the idea of 'milk and honey' (the commandments being nourishing (milk) and good (sweet like honey) and for this reason, the science experiment today is Making Ice Cream! Demonstrated by MorahHaley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg0KE2ZT9uI&t=13s

Language:
Hebrew Letter Memory Game.
These are the first 10 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. Print out the attachment, twice, and cut out the Hebrew letters. Muddle up the letters, place them face down - five across, four down, and take turns turning over two letters at a time.  If your two letters match, they're yours! Continue until all the letters are accounted for.  The person with the most letters wins! http://drive.google.com/file/d/1FPYn9Tgbypb2757wyplup0oLIgdLYjkU/view?usp=sharing

You may also create your own 10 Commandments, by cutting out the tablets, or cut out two large tablets from a brown paper bag and glue the Hebrew letters on. See the order of the letters on the attachment.

Number:
There are 7 weeks between Passover and Shavuot. Make a mountain (Mount Sinai) with 7 groups of 7 objects each.  Find seven of each item below and group the like objects together. Starting with the 7 biggest objects, lay them at the base of the 'mountain' as follows, starting with the books:
                                                       7 coins
                                                            7 crayons
                                                          7 Lego Blocks
                                                   Next up is Seven socks
Then lay out seven toilet paper rolls
Above that place 7 of your favorite stuffed animals or dolls
Take 7 books and lay them side by side in a horizontal line on the floor.

Extension: Count all the objects, starting with the first book and continue counting all the way up the mountain.

Gross Motor:
It is popular for families to go on a Shavuot hike, noticing the new leaves, flowers, young birds and insects along the way.  You may want to pretend that you are Moses going up Mount Sinai.
