Garinim:

We begin every morning singing our favorite song, “Look Who Came to School Today “. The children really love beginning their day with it. We also sing the days of the week song in both English and Hebrew along with hand motions.

Our theme for this week was transportation. The children took a race car and rolled it into some red paint and made tire tracks on a paper plate to make a racing car track. We also had a car wash activity set up in our practical life area. The children used a toothbrush and some sudsy water to scrub our cars. If there were any spills, no problem, they had a sponge available to soak up any bubbles or extra water.

Part of our Judaica study this week is the re- telling the story of Noah and his family. So, in the sensory table the children were able to rip blue tissue paper, play with dark and light blue colored stones, animals (two by two) and mini boats to symbolize the rain/geshem and water/mayim during the flood of Noach and the ark he built.

We have been singing The Wheels on the Bus, a Hebrew song about a train and how the tickets get punched as they travel throughout Israel.

We have read  Go Train Go, Bucket Trucks and Trucks On Trucks, Noah's Ark and Naamah and the Ark at Night.

Wednesday we made challah dough which is always a classroom favorite activity. We took a large piece of paper, cookie shaped animal cutters dipped in paint to create our own Noah’s ark. In stages the children painted Noah’s and his family and birds flying in search of dry land with watercolor paint. At the very end a rainbow/Keshet was seen high in the sky.

Thursday was challah baking day. The children might (so sorry for messy clothing) have gotten a bit too excited about rolling the dough out into snakes to make their own mini challot. We created our own Noah’s ark with popsicle sticks, glue and tried to add some animal stamps with an ink pad. Morah Dawn, the school music teacher, will be visiting our class once a week. She explained how to get ready before singing. Morah Dawn showed us how to stretch, how to stand and how to keep our hands by our sides. She taught us a song about being thankful! She also gave us some homework to think about who and what we are grateful for!

Friday we headed to the Chapel to welcome in Shabbat with the other Montessori classrooms! We sang our favorite Shabbat songs in the hallway down to the Chapel. The children love to march around the Chapel holding the mini Torah’s singing the Torah song. Then it was back to the classroom to light our candles, drink the wine/yayin (grape juice) and say the motzi before enjoying our challah. One of the children was so sweet she was humming a little happy song as she was eating her challah!

Alim:

This week was super special because we had a new student named Sophia that joined our Alim Classroom.   The children welcomed her with such nice manners into our class.  We played name games several times to help her learn all the kiddos names.

On Monday,  the children were shown a new Sound of the Week. The sound was "Tt". We read the alpha tale book When Tily Turtle Came to Tea.  There were corresponding sound sheets and letter formation sheets available to the children. There was a new SAND TRAY to trace the letter in the sand added to the language shelf.  Also,  the classroom transformed to Purple.  There were secondary color activities available by mixing the colors blue and red in Practical Life and ART.  There was a new bubble whisking work which involves a multistep activity that the children enjoyed doing with water.  There was a coin purse activity,  pouring one large pitcher into 3 smaller containers. In art,  there was chalk rubbing with blue and red pieces to make the color purple. At the easel the children mixed red and blue paint to make the secondary color purple.  Monday is gum day and the children played a relay race with bean bags.

On Tuesday we had a nice long work morning.  Children were working nicely in the classroom.

On Wednesday, we made Challah and had a wonderful, busy work day.

On Thursday,  Morah Dawn came into our classroom and continued teaching the beats of the drum with the children. We braided the challah and baked it so it is ready for Shabbat on Friday.

On Friday,  we went to the chapel, along with David's family.  We sang songs with Morah Lana and enjoyed the parsha of Noah and the Ark.  We went back to the classroom and enjoyed our challah and grape juice.  This week the Shabbat box went home with David and his family.  WE can't wait to hear all the adventures he had with our fox friend Shual.  Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alim Judaics: Alim practiced the Hebrew alphabet through a very fun Israeli song. The class also learned a children's song that Morah Márcia learned at Hebrew school when she was their age. We read the story of Noah, and learned names of different animals in Hebrew.

Anafim:

This week we had a bit of a calmer week and had some really nice work periods.  We spent some time talking about transportation, autumn, and a little introduction to land water and air.  Painting at the easel is definitely still a favorite activity in our classroom and our bulletin board is bursting with all of the children’s beautiful art work.

Monday we looked at lots of different types of vehicles; cars, trucks, airplanes, boats, hot air balloons and more.  Once we identified all the vehicles we discussed where we would find each of these, on land, in the water, or in the air.  We really enjoyed sorting the vehicles into these three categories.  This work was put on the shelf for the rest of the week and the children enjoyed repeating this activity throughout the week. This week in gym class with Coach Oren we enjoyed a relay race.  The children were split up into two groups and two by two they had to run down to the crate of bean bags and take one out.  Once they had chosen one they ran back to their line and dropped their bean bag into their crate and the next person had a chance to run to get a bean bag.  The children really enjoyed this game!

Tuesday was spent talking about autumn.  Why we call this season fall (because the leaves are falling from the trees) why the leaves fall off the trees (in preparation for winter) and what we can do in fall.  We also enjoyed learning a new song to the tune of London Bridge- Autumn leaves are falling down, falling down, falling down.  Autumn leaves are falling down; red, orange, yellow and brown.  During our second group time we enjoyed hearing the story of Noah and the ark.  We were enraptured by the story of this huge boat that two of every creature was loaded into.  The children were quite excited to hear about the dove flying out and returning with an olive branch.

Wednesday we talked more about fall; the weather, what activities we can do in the fall and what we see during fall.  After a lovely work period we gathered back together and were introduced to the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet – Aleph א.  We then practiced singing the aleph- bet song in a repeat after me fashion.  The children really enjoyed singing and asked for the song to be repeated several times.

Thursday we were introduced to our new letter sound ‘p’.  We looked inside the sound pouch and found a peanut, a pretzel, a pineapple and a pig.  We enjoyed feeling the sandpaper letter before pulling out two other sound pouches and reviewed what was inside.  We then mixed them all up, passed out the manipulatives and each had a chance to name our object and place it on the sandpaper letter that their object starts with.  The children did amazing with this activity.  We will definitely be building on this throughout the year.  Morah Dawn came and once again brought her bongo.  We reviewed our 4 different notes (eighth, quarter, half and whole) with our song and dance before moving on to the next unit.  We were introduced to different volume markings.  It was so perfect because the first one she showed us was p.  We learned that this stands for piano and means to play or sing softly or quietly.  We then learned about f for forte and pp for pianissimo and ff for fortissimo.  Of course Morah Dawn had a song for all of these.  See if your child remembers what to do for each one!

Friday was rainy so we entered through the hallway and enjoyed some books and time to chat with Moreh Kevin.  Once in our classroom we quickly changed our shoes and used the bathroom before lining up to join the other Montessori classes on the walk down to the chapel.  In the chapel this week Morah Lana told the story of Noah and the ark.   We loved all of her props to help retell the story, especially the animals walking two by two up into the ark!  Back in our room we blessed the candles, grape juice and challah and then enjoyed having snack all together.  We enjoyed doing a little cleaning today with some friends helping to wash the dishes and clean the easel.  Working together to make our classroom beautiful and clean is such a wonderful sight.  Because of the rain, we joined Garinim and Alim in the gym for some dancing and movement games.  We had so much fun!!

Just a reminder that individual picture day is on Monday.  We are going to have ours done close to the start of the day so please send your child dressed ready to go.  If you would like to send your child with clothes to change into after we will help them change.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Keshet:

It’s Noah and the Ark this week - you’ll see it in their daily writing page, in math activities and feel free to ask your child why there was a great flood covering the whole earth. You may want to ask for specific examples - they came up with some good reasons (of poor behavior) like ‘drawing on the wall at home’ :)

In Hebrew we are working with the animal cards; matching pictures and separate Hebrew words for the animals, and playing games to help remember the Hebrew words.  They are getting really good at this!

Their writing now includes a capital letter for the beginning of a sentence, or the start of someone’s name (or day of the week, month ) and a period at the end of the sentence.

In math we incorporated counting in two’s (pairs) as a two footed jumping game (corresponding to a number card), a number rhyme ‘2,4,6,8 Mary at the cottage gate…’ Practicing numbers that come before, numbers that come after, graph cataloging and addition with objects. The idea behind all of this is encouraging practice in writing numbers correctly (and neatly!) On Friday group math they each built an ark with Lego blocks and then counted and recorded the number of each color block used.

Some children are excitedly working on tying knots, and bows (we’ll keep practicing), playing the addition snake game, working with numbers to 100, and the Trinomial Cube has been a hot activity this week.

In Geography we are continuing with Europe, pin pricking the continent and talking about different countries. So far we have focused on Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Greece and France. Ask your child what they might remember about any of these countries! We read abouit Joan Miro, and this life journey - an artist who lived in Barcelona, Spain and has art displayed in exhibits all around the world!

Music with Morah Dawn this week has been learning a lot about rhythm notes, rests, and time signatures. They played two games to learn how to identify different time signatures!
