This Week in 7 and 8, May 20

This week we continued our study of the decade before the Civil War and the events that led up to southern secession and the attack on Fort Sumter. Yesterday we read the beginning of a paper I wrote in grad school  about the huge impact that Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin had on northern public opinion about slavery and abolition.

8th grade Algebra 1 completed the presentations for the statistics project and reviewed for the final.7th grade Algebra 1 course 2 reviewed for the final. 7th grade algebra 1 course 2 worked on solving systems of linear equations.

In language arts we have been reading classic short stories, including Shirley Jackson’s class “The Lottery.” After we finished reading the story, the 7th and 8th graders were put into groups to discuss its meaning and why it is still timely.

In Judaics, we are in various stages of reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

The students were introduced to the art of Molas, a traditional art form of South and Central America. Although it is typically done as a fabric applique, we are creating ours out of paper.
