Grades 7-8: Week of 10/2/23

In Social Studies, the week started with a study of the Articles of Confederation, which failed as a unifying document for the new country.  We talked about unitary, confederate, and federal models and how the Constitution was borne out of several key compromises, which the students learned and journaled about, before turning to the Bill of Rights. Students got an overview of the first ten amendments! Ask them about the most memorable ones!

This week in Language Arts, we began our short story unit with the story ‘Harrison Bergeron.’ We emphasized when and how a climax is used in a story. Please ask your student to summarize the story for you. It’s a really excellent example of dystopian sci-fi.

In Civics, having finished learning about Articles I, II, and III of the Constitution, we turned to the Bill of RIghts. Overlapping with history, we studied the nuances of the First Amendment and then touched on the first ten, including double jeopardy, searches, testifying against oneself, and more!

In Hebrew, the 8th graders learned about the city of Tel Aviv. They learned where the city got its name. They also read an article about how Har Hazevel (the garbage mountain), also known as Park Ariel Sharon, turned into a beautiful place through recycling efforts.

In Judaics, we are learning a long mishnah on sukkah-building. We asked ourselves what questions we had about the sukkah from the Torah text and wrote lists of those questions. We are going to see how many of the questions are answered in our mishnah.

This week in 7th Grade Math, we have been working on multiplying and dividing integers, and we continued to explore rational numbers.

In 8th Grade Algebra, we started to explore the linear function.

This week in Art, the students learned about the proportions of the human body, in conjunction with what they are learning in science – ask them how many heads tall our bodies typically are. Then they did their own drawings to further understand.

This week in Music, we started to learn about the musical history of Ireland and the influence of the Celtic Settlement. We learned about different traditional Irish instruments as well! Our performer was Miriam who played the guitar and sang. Our Mimi Award Winners were Dan & Toyba!
